Connect to and Secure a Windows VPS with RDP
Understand Remote Desktop, connect to a Windows VPS, and reduce common account and network risks.
What is Remote Desktop?
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a Microsoft protocol used to access a Windows desktop over a network. Confirm the supported Windows image and the initial access information for your specific order. From a Windows computer, open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the server IP address, and authenticate with the assigned administrator account.
Hardening Your RDP Connection
RDP is frequently targeted by automated login attempts. Use a unique long password, enable Network Level Authentication where supported, restrict inbound RDP access to trusted source addresses using the Windows firewall or an available network control, keep Windows updated, disable unused accounts, and review sign-in logs. Changing the port alone is not a substitute for access control and strong authentication.
